Who We Are Research Achievements

Some of HRI's recent research achievements are:

  • We have discovered that high density lipoproteins (HDLs), the blood cholesterol fraction that protects against heart disease, have powerful anti-inflammatory properties that contribute to their ability to protect against heart disease. This finding will lead to new treatments for patients who have just had a heart attack or stroke.
  • We have discovered that high density lipoproteins (HDLs), the blood cholesterol fraction that protects against heart disease, undergo constant remodelling during their circulation in blood in processes that have the capacity to greatly increase their protective function. This finding will be exploited to devise new therapeutic approaches designed to enhance the protective properties of HDLs.
  • We have discovered novel mechanisms by which oxidation causes and how anti-oxidant strategies can protect against the disease. We are now exploring ways to apply this finding to the development of new strategies for preventing heart disease.
  • We have discovered that androgens (male sex hormones) have effects on the artery wall that increase the risk of heart disease. This finding partly explains why men tend to develop heart disease at a younger age than women.
  • We have discovered that substances formed in the placenta when pregnant women have high blood pressure cause damage to the heart and blood vessels. This finding explains why women whose blood pressure is high in pregnancy have an increased risk of developing heart disease later in later life. It also highlights the importance of ensuring proper treatment of blood pressure during pregnancy.
