More international acclaim for our scientists

Seven scientists from The Heart Research Institute’s Free Radical and Inflammation Groups were invited to present at the 7th International Human Peroxidase Meeting in Brussels, Belgium earlier this year.

Peroxidase is an important family of human enzymes, intricately linked to heart health. A member of this family (MPO) releases powerful compounds that attack the source of an infection… but sometimes, healthy proteins and tissue can be accidentally damaged, causing disease. Our studies showed that levels of MPO in the blood correlate with an increased risk of cardiovascular events.

Scientists honoured include Tessa Barrett (judged to have the Best Abstract by a PhD student in the Young Scientist Session); Dr Kate Hadfield; PhD student Tracey Kajer; two senior post-doctoral scientists Dave Pattison and Philip Morgan; and Free Radical Group Leader, Professor Mike Davies.

Our Free Radical and Inflammation groups will host the 2013 International Human Peroxidase Meeting.
