Elaine Wat Wins Young Investigator Award
Elaine Wat, a 2nd year PhD Student in the Nutrition and Metabolism Group, has won a Young Investigator Award for her research entitled, Effect of a Dietary Phospholipid-Rich Dairy Milk Extract on Serum and Liver Lipid Levels in Mice fed Normal Chow or a High-Fat Diet.
Elaine presented her work at the joint 6th Congress of The Asian Pacific Society of Atherosclerosis and Vascular Diseases and the 10th Hong Kong Diabetes and Cardiovascular Risk Factors, East Meets West Symposium. Her paper was awarded one of the ‘Best Paper Presentation Prizes' at the conference, and explored the potential therapeutic benefits of dairy-milk phospholipids. Elaine's excellent work was also recognised by the International Atherosclerosis Society, and the Regional IAS Chairman, Yuji Matsuzawa, who presented her with a Young Investigator Award.
Held in Hong Kong, where the East really does meet the West, this year's conference followed the theme ‘Combating Cardiovascular Disease Through Collaborative Care'. Chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes and obesity often co-exist and have overlapping risk factors. This joint Congress and Symposium invited over 1000 international researchers and leading experts to network, debate and exchange ideas. The discoveries shared from their research have the potential to provide a cornerstone for the development of future therapies for the biggest killers of the 21st century.
