The Need

More than ever, we are aware of the need to increase research funding to fight heart disease which threatens our lives and those of our loved ones.

Whilst there are many causes of heart disease, the most significant is atherosclerosis - the thickening of blood vessels and build-up of fatty plaques within them. Atherosclerosis can develop silently for many years without symptoms. It can strike unexpectedly regardless of age, gender, race or social standing. Often, heart attacks and strokes develop when a blood clot lodges in a  vessel that is already partially blocked by atherosclerosis.

Understanding and overcoming atherosclerosis is one of the most important medical challenges in the world.

The cost

The human cost of heart disease is the highest of any known disease. It devastates lives more than deaths caused by cancer, AIDS and accidents combined. More worrying is the fact that about 40% of today's children under the age of 15 years are showing early signs of heart disease.

Non-Profit Charity

The Heart Research Institute is a non-profit charity. We rely on donations and grants to conduct lifesaving research and each year The Heart Research Institute needs to raise over £3 million to speed up the research into prevention, early diagnosis and reversal of atherosclerosis. Today's research is tomorrow's cure.
