How to keep active and healthy during the warmer months

With the warmer weather coming, whether your plans include camping, a BBQ or catching up with family and friends, you can bet there’ll be plenty of grilled, fried and sugar-laden treats.

To stay healthy during spring and summer, the key is to be mindful of your consumption - taste a little of everything by all means, but balance that out with plenty of activity.
Here are some suggestions for making your summer holidays a little healthier:
1) Stay well hydrated. 

Drink plenty of low-energy liquids (especially water) throughout the day - this will help you feel better and also keep you feeling full so you’re less likely to over-consume. Snack on fruits and vegetables with high water content like watermelon. 

2) Go easy on the alcohol. 

While tasty and adding to the social atmosphere, alcoholic drinks contain a lot of energy and can cause dehydration. No need to skip them altogether, but limit your consumption.

3) Snack healthily
  • Dip veggies or wholegrain pita chips into hummus

  • Try salsa or low-fat yoghurt-based dips

  • Use low-fat yoghurt instead of mayo in your potato salad

  • Trade out fatty beef burgers for lean turkey or veggie burgers

  • Emphasise fruit as a main dessert option

4) Avoid processed foods

Opt to make entrees and side dishes yourself, trading out ingredients with high fat, sodium or sugar content for healthier options. 

5) Stay active 

look for some fun community events in your area. Sign up for Fun Runs; head to the pool ; go water skiing; BBQ some lean and veggies at the beach. You’re more likely to be active in these environments.

6) Play a game with the family

If you’re staying home or heading to the park, take tennis racquets and a ball; play volleyball or touch footy; or just throw a Frisbee around. Why not challenge your friends?

7) Set up a relay race

Include events such as crab crawling, sack hopping, an egg-and-spoon race or a three-legged race. Use your imagination to create fun and keep people moving!

8) Get in an early workout.

An early hike or run will help you to avoid the worst of the heat and start off your day on the right foot.
